👋 Basics
What is Dictation Daily?
A free website to practise listening. You hear a sentence from a real video, type it, and see your mistakes.
Do I need an account?
No. You can do every lesson without one. Sign in with Google only if you want the app to remember your progress.
Which level should I choose?
Start with B1, or sort by Slowest speaker first. If most sentences are right in 1 or 2 tries, go up a level. How to choose.
How long should I practise?
10–20 minutes a day is great. Every day is better than one long day. Pick a daily goal: 5, 10, 15 or 20 minutes.
What videos are there?
More than 1,800 videos from TED, BBC Learning English and Great Big Story.
A level has very few videos.
Not every video has a level yet. Try Speed: Slow or Sort: Slowest speaker first instead.
Where is “For you” or the Status filter?
You see them only when you're signed in.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes! See how.
✍️ Lessons
Can I slow the video down?
Yes. Click ⚙ on the video → Speed → 0.5x. With pictures.
Why are some words already there?
The first and last words of a sentence are the hardest to hear, so the app gives them to you. Type the words in the gap. Typing the whole sentence is OK too.
What is the red line under the gap?
It fills while the missing words are spoken. So you know where your part starts and ends.
Can I turn on subtitles?
No. Subtitles are always off, so you really listen. When you get a sentence right, you see all the words.
The sentence stopped playing.
It plays 3 times, then waits. Press Replay or Tab to hear it again.
The ▶ arrow is grey.
Get the sentence right first. Or press Skip.
Why is there nothing to type?
That's a “Just listen” part: music, or words that are too short or too fast. The next sentence starts by itself. Press Enter to skip.
How do I try a sentence again?
Go back with ◀ and press Undo. See how.

💡 Answers
My answer is right, but the app says it's wrong.
Look at the green word in the hint. That's what the video says. Often it's:
- a small word like “a” or “the”
- a word ending like -s or -ed
- a word your phone autocorrected
Type it the way the hint shows.
Do capital letters, numbers or spelling matter?
These are all OK:
- capital letters, commas, full stops, apostrophes
- numbers as digits or words: 19 = nineteen
- money: $5 = five dollars
- British or American spelling: colour = color
What does “Almost! Check the spelling” mean?
You heard the word, but one or two letters are wrong. Fix the spelling and press Enter.
Do I need to press Enter when I'm right?
No. When you type the last right word, the ✓ comes by itself. Press Enter only to check a sentence you're not sure about.
Why does it show only one mistake?
So you listen again for each word. Fix it, press Enter, and see the next one.
Can I see the answer?
Not all at once. But each Enter shows you the next word. You can also skip.
I think the answer is wrong.
It can happen. The sentences are written by a computer. Type what the hint says, or skip.
🔥 Progress
Why did my lesson start again from the beginning?
- You weren't signed in.
- You pressed START too fast. Wait one second.
- You didn't get any sentence right in that video yet.
My lesson opened at an earlier sentence.
The app remembers the last sentence you got right. If you went back and redid sentence 5, the lesson opens at sentence 6.
Why is my streak lower than I expected?
A new streak day starts at midnight world time (UTC), maybe not at your midnight. See your time.
I didn't reach my daily goal. Is my streak safe?
Yes. One correct sentence keeps your streak. The goal is extra.
Why is my learning time low?
Only active time counts: listening and typing on sentences you got right.
My numbers went back to zero.
The “this year” numbers on My progress start again every 1 January. Your videos and streak are still saved.
👤 Account and privacy
Can I sign in without Google?
Not now. You can still practise without signing in.
My progress or My videos is empty.
Check which Google account you used. Click your picture to see it. Each account has its own progress.
What does the app save about me?
Your name, email and picture from Google, which sentences you got right and when, and your daily goal. What you type is never sent or saved.
Does the app see my Google password?
No. You sign in on Google's own page.
How do I delete my data?
Contact the site owner.
